intro

There's a quotation I read a while back: "The world knows nothing of its greatest men."

Daddy died 0n 21 March 2011. In his last ten years, I got the chance to spend more time with him, and he was not just my father, he was my friend and mentor. I was also his fan, I thought he was like Leonardo Da Vinci. He was a pretty amazing person, and a bit of a genius too. He was very artistic and creative, always inventing things or painting or drawing or cooking up wonderful recipes. He could (and did) make tables and chairs, stitch his own clothes, fix shoes, electrical or plumbing problems, and even design houses. He was a quiet person who would occasionally surprise us all with the funniest jokes. He also took a lifetime of photographs, most of which I plan to share here.

I'm putting this blog together so that all of him doesn't have to be lost, and so that everyone - both those who knew him and those who didn't - can have the chance to know him a little better.

Striding through the rain

I too, am one of the works of ART, and here I am, about 3 or 4 years old, delighted with the deluge. This would be around 1969 or 1970, I think, in Awali.

On the beach with the Joshis

Pretty sure my dad is the photographer. He was very fond of using a tripod and timer, framing the picture the way he wanted it, and then hurrying back into frame! He does look like he's just sat down, doesn't he?

Mummy is extreme right, Dr Joshi and Nalini Aunty next to her. The children are my siblings Yasmin and Shaheen with the Joshi twins, Milind and Arvind (not sure if Arvind is the right name - I've forgotten).

In years to come, I came along, and so did Manoj, the Joshis' youngest son. We were great buddies in our childhood, but sadly I've lost touch with him now.

My parents' wedding invitation.

I found Mummy and Daddy's wedding invitations in an old album. This is an invitation to the reception - what we call the "valima" (vu-LEE-ma). They were married 10 days earlier in Madras.

No doubt he spent some time going over and over the exact words and spacing before he was satisfied that it was printable! I do the same thing:  clearly inherited the edit gene from him.
